Ausable Chasm

Adventure seekers, nature lovers, photographers, and bird watchers… this one is for YOU!

Ausable Chasm is called the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks. One of America’s oldest natural attractions with waterfalls, rapids, and caves. A true natural wonder. Ausable Chasm first opened to the public in 1870 as a popular destination and natural wonder. This attraction offers something for nature lovers, families, and the adventurous.  It is a sandstone gorge 2 miles long, known as the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks.  You will see geological formations such as the “Dragon’s Tooth” and “Indian Head Rock” that took eons to be carved out by the Ausable River. Ausable Chasm contains cliffs, forests, rushing water, incredible views, and wildlife.

There are 5 miles of mild-to-moderate trails.  Trails are not too challenging, and all ages will have fun.  Start with a simple tour of various hiking trails where you will see waterfalls, scenic views, and wildlife.  If you are a photographer, you will enjoy capturing scenic views and wildlife as the trails wind through lush forests and vegetation.  Bird watchers will also enjoy the area.

When you sign up for this tour, you will have admission to the Scenic Trails as well as the River Walk.

You can choose one, two, or all family friendly Scenic Trails:

·                Inner Sanctum Trail – 1 mile

·                Rim Walk Trail – 2 miles

·                Dry Chasm Trail – 1.5 miles

·                Rainbow Falls & Elephant’s Head Vista – ½ mile

The River Walk is a thrilling guided experience that takes you on a 200 step descent (must be able to do stairs) to have an up-close encounter with the river that formed this canyon.  This is also family friendly for ages 5 and up.  You will have a riverside viewpoint of Rainbow Falls before exploring Devil’s Oven.  View towering walls at 200’ above.  You will then take a suspension bridge to continue on the path.  This bridge is a highlight for many and is safe with wide sturdy planks and cargo netting.  No need for harnesses as this is a family friendly bridge. You will then continue on a river ledge trail and then to a second suspension bridge.  This tour is approximately 30-45 minutes long.  Helmets are required and are provided for everyone’s safety.  Additionally, closed-toe shoes are a must!  You can then decide to walk the Inner Sanctum trail as a finale to this walking adventure.

After doing some trails as you decide, you will be able to stop in at the café for lunch which is included.

Ausable Chasm Café Signature Items:

·                Sandstone Panini: A blend of savory ingredients nestled between perfectly toasted bread.

·                46er Burger: A mountainous feast of flavors that pays homage to the majestic Adirondack High Peaks.

·                Devil's Oven Panini: A spicy sensation that ignites your taste buds.

Wear good walking shoes.  Some trials have natural elements including stones and dirt along the way that you are going to have to navigate around.  Some trails may get muddy or slippery, especially following rain.

You can add on other activities (at your own cost) such as Raft Float Tours, Tubing Float, Rappelling, Rock Climbing, and the Adventure Trail (Via Ferrata) for the extra adventurous.  You may want to book these activities ahead of time.

While planning your trip, consider setting aside at least half a day to enjoy the chasm fully. Parents with kids can choose family-friendly options like the guided boat tours which make the experience both educational and fun. Don’t forget to pack a picnic or snacks as there are picturesque spots along the trails where you can relax and enjoy the scenery.

If you plan to partake in activities like rafting or guided tours, ensure you check in advance for availability and any physical requirements, especially if traveling with younger children or older adults. Additionally, be sure to carry essentials such as sunscreen, water bottles, and hats or sunglasses, especially during warmer months.  Please stay hydrated with refill station throughout the park.

Make sure to stop by the Visitor Center, where you can get advice on what to add or where to start, find the restrooms, buy souvenirs, and pick up local crafts.

Some trails are designed to be compliant with ADA standards.

No drones, no pets, and no strollers.  Backpack carriers are permitted and available for rent.

The chasm entry is well marked and has plenty of parking.

This is a unique place and geological interest that will provide enjoyment for all and fun memories for all.  A must see!
